… Smooth tooth-like and volcanic rock formations sticking up out of the ground in the Alabama Hills near Lone Pine, California. It feels like being on a planet from a sci fi movie. That is probably why so many sci fi movies have been filmed here, as well as a large number of classic western TV shows.

… A staged poker game inside the saloon at the Laws Railroad Museum just outside Bishop, California. It is kind of out of the average 395 traveler’s path, but it is a really neat and fascinating place. So much old west paraphernalia and other historic stuff on display. There is an old train turntable, some old still-functioning trains, several different buildings displaying various old professions like a doctor’s office, a dentist’s office, a beauty parlor, and a schoolhouse. There is also a surprisingly very large old camera collection on display. A very cool afternoon or morning stop for a couple hours if you are in the area.

… The dark sky over the Alabama Hills makes for pretty amazing star gazing. At one point in the night I was wandering around, where I set up camp on a higher hill over looking most of the hills and looking toward Mount Whitney, and I just sat down on the ground staring off into the night. It is a spectacular treat to be alone with only the stars of a dark sky.
